Comedians Off the Stage

Comedians are some of the wildest people in the world. Whether they are on stage or off, they are almost always doing something interesting.

Introduction

Ever since the start, comedians have been people who think differently than the rest of society. Being a comedian is a mystifying job where they must entertain a crowd with nothing but thoughts in their head. Those who rise to the top usually have a predisposition to think outside the box. They aren’t just freethinkers on stage, but in their daily lives as well. Most comedians have all sorts of different hobbies. A few are into cars and living life in the fast lane. Some of them do crazy activities like fighting bears and traveling the world. Several are into fitness and taking care of their body. There are a lot of different personalities in stand-up as well. There are comedians who are very private, and there are those who are extremely outgoing. Those who are sober, and some are party animals. Comedy comes in unique shapes and sizes, and comedians come from all walks of life. These are just a few of the many ways comedians spend their free time.

The Fast Lane

When comedians are on stage, they must think quickly. Of course, they have their written jokes to tell, but it’s their duty to be able to riff as well. They must go from one subject to another seamlessly and remain poised, so the audience doesn’t realize the trick. The key to comedy is timing, where being late can ruin a joke. On the other hand, one thing that causes comedians to be late getting to the stage is traffic. Freeway congestion can be extremely annoying in big cities like Los Angeles, where many comics are based. Bill Burr was especially concerned with the traffic in L.A. In specific he wondered what would happen if everyone was trying to get out of the city at once. On Howie Mandel’s podcast, he said he started flying in 2015, and part of the reason was his belief in a conspiracy theory. He thought the dollar was going to collapse and leave the country in financial ruins. He didn’t know how he and his family would get out of the city if that happened, so he got his pilot’s license and bought a G2 helicopter. Now Burr flies regularly, as long as the weather is nice. He has flown himself and other comedians to shows.

While Burr chose the air, there are comedians who love the road. Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno both famously love cars and created shows such as Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and Leno’s “Jay Leno’s Garage,” involving their immense collections. Two comedians have taken this to a new level recently, though. Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer announced that they were launching 2 Bears Racing in April 2022. Bert bought the racing team for Tom, for his birthday, as part of a tradition that involves the two one-upping each other with money spent on gifts every year. It started out with Tom buying him an e-bike in 2020 and things have gotten progressively more out of control. Pursuing these spur-of-the-moment thoughts and acting on them is a hallmark of stand-up both on stage and off.
