Breaking into the comedy scene as a woman is like showing up to an open mic night with actual punchlines — rare, risky, and guaranteed to rattle the regulars if you’re any good.
Fortunately, the following women didn’t just break the glass ceiling — they smashed it, picked up the shards, and used them as glitter for their Netflix specials.
Here’s a spotlight on some of the funniest women who owned 2025. (Sorry, fellas. This party’s invite-only.)
Taylor Tomlinson
What hasn’t been said about Taylor Tomlinson? At 31, she already has three Netflix specials under her belt — and not the kind of belt she uses to hold in childhood trauma. Whether she’s venting about disastrous dates or digging into her upbringing with surgical precision, her delivery is sharper than your Aunt Linda’s side-eye at Thanksgiving. She’s currently on her “The Have It All Tour,” so check her site before it sells out.

Sarah Silverman
The comedy vet with a bite, Silverman has been on the scene for over 30 years. Known for her razor-sharp commentary and some early-career shock humor (we all had a “cringe phase,” okay?), she’s matured into a voice that’s both hilarious and brutally honest. Her newest Netflix special, Postmortem, dropped May 20 — and no, it’s not about zombies. Probably.
Specials to Watch: We Are Miracles, Speck of Dust, Someone You Love
Michelle Buteau
You don’t watch a Buteau set — you get hit by it. With hurricane-force charisma and a punchy mix of feminism, parenting, and pot jokes, she practically vibrates off the stage. She also made history this year as the first woman to film a stand-up special at Radio City Music Hall. That special? A Buteau-ful Mind. That title alone deserves an Emmy.

Melissa Villaseñor
If you’ve never seen Villaseñor’s impressions, just imagine a ventriloquist whose dummy is… every celebrity ever. In her special Welp… What Now?, she reflects on her life post-SNL and shares what it’s like impersonating celebs to their faces. (Spoiler: awkward and amazing.)

Ali Wong
Ali Wong isn’t just funny — she’s an empire in heels. Between Baby Cobra, Beef, and Always Be My Maybe, she’s cornered the market on smart, savage, emotionally raw comedy. Her stories about navigating motherhood, culture clash, and dating as a powerful woman are delivered with venom, vulnerability, and a whole lot of laughs.
Specials to Watch: Baby Cobra, Hard Knock Wife, Don Wong, Single Lady
Iliza Shlesinger
Iliza’s stage presence is part motivational speaker, part rabid raccoon — and we love her for it. She’s got six Netflix specials, a sketch show, and an eye for calling out society’s ridiculous standards for women. Watching her is like getting a TED Talk from your funniest friend who’s also not afraid to yell.
Specials to Watch: War Paint, Freezing Hot, Confirmed Kills, Elder Millennial, Over & Over, Unveiled
Wanda Sykes
Wanda Sykes could read a grocery list and get a standing ovation. Her comedy swings from ridiculous (Vicks VapoRub on her kid’s face?) to real (coming out in a less-than-accepting era). She’s living proof that observational comedy and pure sass are a recipe for brilliance.
Specials to Watch: I’ma Be Me, What Happened… Ms. Sykes?, Not Normal
Jessica Kirson
Kirson brings physical comedy back in a big way — complete with wild facial contortions and characters that feel suspiciously like people you know from synagogue. She excels at crowd work and self-deprecation, whether she’s mocking loud elderly fans or skewering toxic diet culture.
Specials to Watch: Talking to Myself, Crowd Work, I’m the Man
Sam Jay
From the SNL writers’ room to the main stage, Sam Jay doesn’t pull punches. She makes pants sound like the beginning of the end for civilization — and honestly, she has a point. Her comedy blends political critique with cultural commentary in a way that feels like both a slap and a hug.
Specials to Watch: 3 in the Morning, Salute Me or Shoot Me
Urzila Carlson
Carlson hails from New Zealand via South Africa, and she’s got the accent, attitude, and anecdotes to prove it. Her style is like your funniest friend after three glasses of wine — brutally honest and completely unfiltered. Also, if you’ve never heard a road rage story end with “I’m gonna punch your tit,” it’s time.
Specials to Watch: Overqualified Loser, Token African, It’s Personal, Just No!
Luenell
If you’re not already a Luenell fan, buckle up. She’s the comedy world’s godmother — unfiltered, unapologetic, and totally unforgettable. In her 2023 Netflix special Chappelle’s Home Team – Luenell: Town Business, she takes on sex, aging, and everything in between with a swagger most comedians only dream of. No one delivers dirty jokes with such elegance.
Special to Watch: Town Business
Tiffany Haddish
Haddish didn’t just break out — she exploded onto the comedy scene. From her star-making role in Girls Trip to her Emmy-winning turn on Saturday Night Live, she’s made herself a household name. Her Netflix special Black Mitzvah is a wild celebration of her heritage, her hustle, and her hilarity. She’s loud, proud, and has a laugh that could power a small city.
